The Micro Venture Consulting Project
A Review and a Step Farther
By Steve Szaday
I felt that all the work that was put into this project needed to be appreciated and used.
Even if I myself did not agree with everything stated it is a fantastic building block for
HPC to build upon. The following in outline form are my thoughts for a future HPC and
our place in the community beyond all the great work that we engage in on a daily basis.
Education /Training/Certification
- Workshops
The continuation of the Restore Michiana Series with the ambitious schedule we
employed in 2013. The development of Restore Michiana as its own non for profit
to allow the proceeds from the workshops to become a source of self
sustainability for the non for profit and allow the staff not to cut into the set
budget for the office to be affected by the series.
-IVY Tech Collaboration
Partnership with IVY Tech in education, certification, and legitimization of the
program would benefit both entities as community -based education program and
a positive spin on the housing issue in South Bend
- Public Awareness
A way to increase awareness, appreciation, and practical skills in the care and
maintenance of classic housing stock
To establish recognition outside of the misconception that we are a group bent on
the memories of past achievements, better times, or lost opportunities. We are
active preservationists educating the public and promoting the idea of
appreciating the meaningful and unique built environment that has significant
cultural and historical value.
Community and Municipal Involvement
-Vacant and Abandoned Housing Task Force
We were left out of the game, but could still be part of the team. Although we
were not part of the decision making part of this report we find ourselves part of
the process as 106 reviews for demolition subsidies that come into this office and
have to be reviewed in order to be approved.
This office does not currently have access to the files, nor the interiors of these
properties, yet are asked to sign off on their demolition. This is a waste of way too
much time and money for everyone! The mayor's current plan to combine
department makes sense as this should streamline this process, yet we are still out
