COA Application, 717 Forest Ave.
society prefers, I would also be willing to install an aluminum fence. Because it would be a custom
design, I do not have a brochure with pictures. However, Picture 1 is of a fence built by Custom Steel
Designs (at 711 Forest). Picture 2a and Picture 2b would serve as the inspiration for my fence. I prefer
steel to aluminum because aluminum fencing has fewer options and is less sturdy. Using steel allows
me to design a more ornate and decorative fence in keeping with traditional Victorian -era fences.
Part If: Carport
Plan:
My house has a one -car garage. I believe that this garage was originally a carriage house and I would
like to preserve it without modification. However, my husband and I each have our own car and we'd
like covered parking for both cars. Rather than modifying the existing garage (the carriage house), I
would like to build a carport next to it. I am including a drawing of the proposed carport (Diagram 1). It
would only be visible from the alley. I do not think that it would detract from the historic significance of
the property. I think that it is a pragmatic compromise between maintaining the historic value of the
carriage house and recognizing the realities of modern life (two cars and a lot of snow in winter...).
Materials:
The carport would be built of wood with asphalt shingles. It would be painted to match the garage and
house. It would be constructed by me with assistance from my father. Before retiring, he had a
contracting company in Urbana, IL. He is very well-qualified to build a simple carport.
