2. Material—Additions and improvements involving any new material in the landmark should be of the same material as the <br />original. It should be the same size and texture. An alternative material may be allowed if it duplicates the original. <br />a. wood—all wood trim should conform with existing trim in shape and size. <br />EDGEWATER <br />B. ROOFS AND ROOFING <br />Roof shapes in the district vary from hip and gable to gambrel. All are covered with asphalt shingles. <br />Eaves in most cases, have wood facias with gutters and downspouts. Some aluminum sided houses have aluminum covered <br />facias. <br />Required <br />The existing shape and materials of the roof shall be retained. All architectural features which give the roof its essential character, <br />such as dormer windows, cornices, brackets and weather vanes, shall be retained. <br />Recommended <br />Whenever possible, the original shape and materials of the roof shall be restored. Particular effort should be made to retain <br />materials such as slate, tile and other unique materials not commonly found in new construction. Roof covering which is <br />deteriorated beyond repair should be replaced with new material that matches as closely as possible the existing or original in <br />composition, size, shape, color, and texture. <br />Prohibited <br />Nothing shall be done to change the essential character of the roof by adding architectural features or roofing materials <br />inappropriate to the style of the house. The roof shall not be stripped of architectural <br />features important to its character. <br />Not Recommended <br />If aluminum or vinyl siding is added to a building, overhanging eaves and gables should not be covered or enclosed. <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval of re -roof as it conforms with the guidelines for the district and <br />the landmark. The 1932 Assessor's Card notes asbestos shingles on the roof, the 1988 survey card notes asphalt shingles on roof. <br />Staff approves of the interior gutter repairs. <br />On a motion by Lynn Patrick with a second by Mike Voll to amend application to remove the <br />skylight in the garage, per applicants request. <br />Vote: 5 — 0 Unanimous. <br />COA#2012-0518 Amended. <br />On a motion by Mike Voll with a second by Lynn Patrick to approve application as amended. <br />Vote: 5 — 0 Unanimous. <br />COA#2012-0518 Approved as amended. <br />B. NATIONAL REGISTER NOMINATION <br />1. West LaSalle Street NR District Public Hearing- <br />Dea Andrews, 222 N Scott Street, spoke in support and would like to see the district <br />expanded as specified. <br />Tom and Linda Gordon, 629 W LaSalle, spoke in support of expanding the boundaries as <br />specified and also on the topic of architectural style of their house. <br />Connie and Tom Tooley, 514 W LaSalle, submitted an electronically submitted comment <br />in support. <br />Chair moves to adopt the West LaSalle National Register District recommendation as made by <br />Staff and to include public comments to be sent to the Division of Historic Preservation and <br />Archeology in Indianapolis with a second by Mike Voll. <br />Vote: 5-0 Unanimous. <br />III.
