Historic Preservation Commission
President's Report — May 21St, 2012
• 04/16/2012 7:OOP: HPC Monthly Meeting (Rm 1308).
• 04/20/2012 12:OON: 710 N. St. Joseph Street, River Bend Historic District.
Property owned by Bill and Catherine Hostetler. Catherine Hostetler serves as
Executive Director of the HPC. HPC policy dictates that the President must
approve categorical exclusions to the Ordinance, on property owned by a staff
member. I performed this site visit investigation to review project items
applicable to Routine Maintenance Exclusion allowances.
05/04/2012 5:30P: DTSB Pride of Place Awards/Southhold Awards (Union
Station, South Bend). Assisted Catherine Hostetler and Elicia Feasel with the
presentation of individual awards. Gave introductory speech and presented
Southhold Special Award of Recognition to Mr. Lou Sabo for his many artistic
and educational contributions promoting interest in local history and architecture.
• 05/09/2012 5:OOP (Notre Dame Downtown 217 S. Michigan St.) CLG
Educational Credit Opportunity. Attended Prof. Lucien Steil's Interdisciplinary
Course "American Towns & Cities: Patterns, Types, & Figures" Presentation:
"Decline and Renaissance of South Bend"
The following description is from Notre Dame University; School of Architecture
(http://architecture.nd.edu/arch—eventsDetail.aspx?id=2963):
"The presentation will be organized into four sections: the origin and history
of South Bend; urban renewal and decline; downtown South Bend today
(realities, problems, and potential); and visions for reconstruction and
regeneration of the downtown area. Rather than proposing either a nostalgic
retrospective, or a portrait of a struggling downtown, the presentation will
highlight the city's strength and resources. It will also highlight the interaction
between the University of Notre Dame and the City of South Bend. The
presentation will focus on the making and un -making of downtown South
Bend, and will outline ways in which South Bend can develop a sustainable
urban future."
05/10/2012 5:40P: Special Meeting (HPC Conference Room). Other Members
Present: Lynn Patrick, Kevin Buccellato, Alice McLane, Mike Voll, and David
Steinhauer. Members Absent: Jerry Niezgodski and Sandy Rossow. Staff Present:
Catherine Hostetler, Elicia Feasel, and Larry Meteiver. Meeting held to finalize
COA #2012-0314 and to consider additional COA projects including: #2012-
0420,2012-0507B, and 2012-0507C. Adjournment 6:25P.
