Application for Certificate of Appropriateness
Garage Repair
1097 Riverside Drive, South Bend, IN 46616
Background
The structure is a wood frame garage. I believe the building was erected in the mid
to late 1940's. The building was purchased as a kit (possibly from Sears Roebuck,
and Co, but I'm not sure), delivered in panels via truck, and bolted together on-site.
Each panel consists of a frame made of 2x4 lumber and covered with Cove "Dutch
Lap" siding.
Because the siding is nailed directly to the studs with no sheathing or internal
bracing, the garage has developed a lean. This lean is most pronounced at the end
with the overhead vehicle door. The lean was exacerbated by a previous owner,
who replaced the original garage door with a wider one. In doing so, it was
necessary to remove a portion of the end wall of the garage.
2012-05-07 CoA Application
Garage at 1097 Riverside Drive
The photo on the left was
taken from the back yard of
the property, looking toward
the alley. It shows the side
wall of the garage at the end
with the overhead door. The
lean is clearly visible when
compared to the vertical
fence boards. It leans
approximately 4.5" over the
height of the wall.
