Historic Preservation Commission
President's Report — March 19th, 2012
• 02/27/2012 7:OOP: HPC Monthly Meeting (Rm 1308).
• 03/02/2012 9:3OA-3:3OP: . Coordinate an opportunity with Elicia for my daughter
Kelly to satisfy her community service obligation (as set forth by St. John the Baptist
Catholic School). Kelly re -copied approximately 500 -survey card documents from South
Bend's St. Casimir district, and sorted them by street address. Kelly also began
organizing the HPC periodical collection.
I delivered a door bracket from Lynn Patrick's rehabbed screen door (that I repaired
using "Minwax High Performance Wood Filler" and circulated during the last monthly
meeting). It will continue to serve as a model when explaining the ease, durability and
appearance of epoxy products (including Abatron).
• 03/02/2012 3:00-5:00P: Kelly continued her service work with the HPC by
reorganizing office supplies, periodicals and stockroom inventory.
•
03/03/20122:45P -5:15P: Kelly finished more work in the stockroom and office
supplies cabinet.
03/14,15,16/2012: There are many facets to preservation and countless ways to
demonstrate its benefits in sustaining community assets. In addition to serving on the
Historic Preservation Commission, I am also a founding board member of Chapin Park,
Inc., a local community development corporation whose preference is to rehabilitate
buildingsihouses using cost-effective rehabilitation methods over replacement. CPI's
tagline is, "Preserving Buildings, Transforming South Bend Neighborhoods".
This month, I was informed that the New York Times was interested in doing a story
about community efforts to revitalize South Bend housing during this national economic
crisis. The `Times was interested in exploring CPI and its current project at 612 Portage
Avenue. Elicia Feasel and I were invited to participate in the story as current members of
the CPI board and advocates for preservation.
My position with respect to the project house has been technical. So I provided detailed
information about window and floor rehabilitation methods/improvements that I
developed for this CPI project. I took several opportunities to promote the HPC as well. I
even made sure to tout the virtues of linseed oil conditioning.
I found the "Time's" documentary process to be extensive and educational. CPI was
interviewed by: Susan Saulny NY Times National Correspondent, Craig Duff —
Multimedia Joumalist/Professor of Journalism Northwestern University and Sally Ryan —
Chicago Photo Journalist for the NY Times/Wall Street Journal. CPI was informed that
the article would appear in the next few weeks. Additional content including the video
documentary will be available on NYTimes.com.
