Historic Preservation Commission <br />President's Report — July 16th, 2012 <br />• 06/18/2012 7:OOP: HPC Monthly Meeting (Rm 1308). <br />• 06/27/2012 10:00A: St. Joseph County Public Library — Main Branch — Malloy <br />Room. Joined Dir. Catherine Hostetler. Informational meeting with <br />representatives from the library, DTSB/CED, and Mayor's Office to discuss <br />concerns and alternatives to the proposed demolition of the Avon Theater <br />building. <br />06/28/2012 2:OOP: 309 S. Michigan St. "Avon Theater" on-site visit. Preliminary <br />inspection of the structure (using only flashlights). Assessment by Fritz Herget of <br />Arsee Engineers provided theoretical cost estimates for partial preservation <br />scenarios: 1. If the fagade would to be severed from the main structure and made <br />freestanding, 2. If the terra cotta features/facade would be surgically removed, <br />repaired and mothballed for future use. <br />• 07/12/2012 5:40P: Special Meeting (HPC Conference Room). To discuss the <br />architectural and historic merit of the Avon Theater at 309 S. Michigan St. and to <br />consider any opportunities for preservation through local historic landmark <br />designation. Members Present: Lynn Patrick, Jerry Niezgodski, Alice McLane, <br />Mike Voll, and Sandy Rossow. Members Absent: David Steinhauer and Kevin <br />Buccellato. Staff Present: Catherine Hostetler, Elicia Feasel, and Larry Meteiver. <br />HPC Board unanimously recommended that the Avon Theater (309 S. Michigan <br />St.) be designated a Local Historic Landmark by the South Bend Common <br />Council. Subsequent to that action, the HPC declared Interim Protection, also by <br />unanimous consent. <br />
