Jefferson Blvd. South Bend, IN 48801 Dear Council Members: I am writing at the request of Timothy Klusczlnsld, President of the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County, to provide information about the statewide survey program, ratings in the survey, and the significance of Marquette School which was evaluated and rated. The Indiana Historic Sites and Structures inventory is the statewide survey program that has been Inexistence since 1975. It derives from this offlce's mandate as the Indiana State Historic Preservation Office to Identify properties around the state that may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. To date,.62 of Indiana's 92 counties have been surveyed and most surveys published as "interim" reports. Reports for several of the state's larger metropolitan areas have been published separately. We are currently reviewing the final draft of'report for the City of South Bend. The surveys identify buildings, bridges, cemeteries; and historic districts that are 40 years old and older and have not been seriously altered for the purpose of evaluating architectural and historical significance and rating them regarding eligibility for listing in the National Register. Relatively few properties receive an `Outstanding" rating; only those that clearly appear to be National Register candidates for their architectural andtor historical merit. According to the survey information compiled, the Marquette School reeehred the Outstanding rating on the basis of both architectural and historical significance. It was designed by the local architectural firm of Austin & Shambleau in the Art Deco style and is an excellent example of that style, popular in the late 192.0a and 30s. it is also significant for Its association with the Public Works Administration, a New Deal socialleconomic program that had a notable impact in South Bend during the Great Depression. After reviewing the supporting survey information provided us, we beileVe the Marquette School Is eligible for listing to the National Register of Historic Places. The Register is the nation's official list of cultural propertles worthy of preservation and examples of properties in the city are already listed include Tippecanoe place, Copshaholm, and Second St. Joseph County Courthouse. t should point out that to qualify for listing, properties need An Equal Opportunity Employer Printed on Oftyobd Paper F-Kk, bl
