Steve Szaday's first day as the
Preservation Specialist Intern oriented him with the Office and this month's Coa
applications. Sent Catherine Toppel information on 715 Park that is on violation list and
still being shown to renters by the Kokots. Phone interview with Erin Blasko on 803 W.
Washington Street; faxed him survey card information for article. Canvassed
Commissioners to be sure that there was a quorum for HPC meeting. HPC meeting 7:00-
10:00 pm. Contacted Chris Dressel about broken window sashes in Burke Building.
17 May Prepared and mailed all requested COAs. Met with homeowner Richard
Pierce at 1210 E. Wayne South with Wayne and Russ Luchies concerning stucco and
masonry issues on house and chimney. Worked on setting up Special Meeting for 1414
E. Wayne Street for Tuesday, May 24. Phone conversation with Carol Graham of 1222
E. Wayne Street concerning fence replacement; e-mailed (dmcb1222@comcast.net) link
to COA application site. The Code meeting was cancelled that would have addressed
River Bend's 230 E. Navarre. Contacted Erin Blasko requesting corrections on
misquotes in article on 803 W. Washington; corrections will be made. Phone
conversation with Julie Ducom in California (574-514-0318) about the replacement of
the slate roof with asphalt; she is trying to locate bids for slate from several years ago and
current to illustrate to the Commission the burden of the cost that they cannot afford. The
roof is leaking and prospective buyers will not bid on the house until roof is fixed.
18 May Confirmed and set Special Meeting for 4:30 on Tuesday, May 24 in HPC
Office Conference Room. Set up Legal Notice with Erica Warren at the Trib. Evaluated
roofing quotation for 229 W. North Shore with Wayne and Steve. Contacted Julie
Ducom about Special Meeting and that 1615 E. Wayne was on the Agenda if she could
get bids faxed to HPC by then. Internet research on InSpire imitation slate product and
Pennsylvania slate. Completed eight 106 Reviews for grants for the City; south Bend
Heritage Foundation is doing the work. Most of these homes are in the Survey and a few
are in West Washington NR District.
19 May E-mails with Julie Ducom concerning 1615 E. Wayne slate roof. Wayne
found piece of slate roof on ground when he went to take more photographs; close
examination of slate revealed two things, the irregular edge at the reveal was part of the
design and that the delaminating and spalling is on both side of the slate. Also, the
demensions of the slates on the roof varied. Went to Lowes to examine InSpire product
and was directed by Tim and Brian to Tom at Shelter, Inc as the supplier. InSpire is
—__similar to an artificial slate product in the Office; it could replicate the color but not the
rusticated look as it has a uniform pattern and size. In speaking with Tom, he stated that
the width of the InSpire could not be altered without compromising the product or the
warranty. Received Carol Graham's COA application for a replacement wood fence.
