Sub 20, Sam, Band, IN 46601 Te1574.2W.= Fax 5742882550
MORRIS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER DATE: August 20, 2010
ENTRY DOOR AND WINDOW REPLACEMENT
211 North Michigan Street
South Bend, Indiana 46601
ATTENDEES
Dennis Andres and Jim Monroe (Morris PAC), Catherine Hostetler, Elicia Dadlow, and Wayne
Doolittle (Historic Preservation Commission), Christopher Hartz (JCA), and Historic Preservation
Commission members
CONCLUSIONS
The purpose of the meeting was to review the proposed scope of work in light of Historic
Preservation standards. Comments were made as follows:
Hartz and Andres introduced the project, which will consist of addressing the eight (8)
windows and five (5) sets of doors at the east facade of the Morris Performing Arts Center
(PAC). Hartz explained that there are no proposals or recommendations yet, but that
information regarding what materials should or should not be used is being reviewed. Hartz
further noted that as an authority having jurisdiction, input from the Historic Preservation
Commission (HPC) is an important step in the process.
2. Hartz indicated that the Morris PAC would like to do something with the doors and
windows, in order to provide better energy efficiency, increased UV protection, better
acoustical separation from the outside and less maintenance.
Hostetler stated that if funding for the project includes any federal or state money, the
guidelines published by the US Secretary of the Interior would need to be followed and
approved. Hostetler also indicated that if the funding did not have federal or state money,
only approval from the local HPC would needed. Andres indicated that he is hoping to have
local funding for this project, and that he will be determining this soon. Hostetler indicated
that the HPC will issue a Certificate of Appropriateness (C of A) if the proposed changes are
acceptable.
4. Attendees examined existing conditions at the doors. Andres and Monroe pointed to
locations where the wood doors and/or frames have deteriorated. Andres noted that about
40 hours were needed to repair a single existing door and frame just to make it fiznction
properly. Andres also noted that the southem -most set of doors were replaced when the
interior renovations took place in 2000. These doors display many of the typical problems -
poor weatherstripping, rotted frames, and damaged hardware.
