M, NO 5085
Z-1
November 20, 2009
ROOFING AND RESTORATION, INC.
1703 South Ironwood • South Bend, IN 46613
Catherine D. Hostetler, Director
Historic preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph Co.
125 S Lafayette Blvd,
South Bend, In 46601
Phone: 574.235-9798
Fax. 5-74-235-9578
Re: South Bend Historic Water Works Structure Restoration
Catherine:
Phone 574/233-7485
Fax 574/233-7531
slatileog comcast.net
The historic masonry brick work- on the main structure building is in. need of restoration.
Many of the historic standard sized 8" bark faced masonry units are fractured and in need of
replacement. Tile ornate architecture and ekceptional quality of this structure mandates exact
matching of the masonry units that require replacement.
These high quality obsolete masonry units, in my professional opinion, would be nearly
impossible to obtain. The use of new modular masonry units would be ascetically and
structurally detrimental to the adjoining masonry as well. If obtainable, the cost to purchase the
rare and historic masonry units would be excessive.
The facility has an unused and decommissioned masonry water storage tank that was
constructed with the same historic bark faced 8" masonry units as the main building. The unused
lank has sustained massive decomposition and water related attrition for a prolonged time frame.
Due to the extent of the degradation the cost to restore the unused tank- is considerable,
(previously quoted to the owner at +/- $1,80,000.00)
It is my professional opinion that the scrviceable existing masonry units in the unused
tank should be salvaged and used in the required restoration of the historic main building. -
This would provide matching historic masonry units for future maintenance and structural
masonry repairs for years in the future.
. ESTABLISHED 1924
ROOFING - MASONRY RESTORATION - SHEET METAL
