Lafayette Boulevard South Bend, IN. 46601 RE: Project Description Brief Addition and Renovations to Monroe School Building South Bend, Indiana Commission Members: An addition to and renovation of the Monroe School Building is planned. The renovation work will include interior and exterior building and site improvements. This is contained in detail on the Construction Drawings submitted with the Certificate of Appropriateness application. The addition is approximately 17,500 SF and will create an enclosed circulation flow for the main floor level. This addition will abut the south elevation of the 1942 classroom addition and the east elevation of the 1959 building addition. The exterior fagade of the new addition will include design elements of the original 1930 building such as: • Parallel tall walls on two of the elevations topped with a gable profile at steep pitch replicating the original north facade of the 1930 building. • Steep pitched roofs covered with synthetic slate shingles replicating the original building steep roof areas. • Masonry detailing on the exterior facade reflecting the original building design elements. • Masonry materials and colors to compliment the original building. The addition is designed to compliment and maintain the architectural character and style of the original school building construction. The addition will maintain a discernable break to distinguish the different eras of construction. The building exterior/fagade renovation work includes fenestration replacement, entrance system replacement, masonry restoration and repairs, and roof and gutter drainage system replacement. In detail this work is as follows: Replacement of the windows on the main and second levels of the building with thermally broken window units with insulated glass. The site lines and window profiles replicate the steel sash windows of the 1930 building. The lead caming pattern will be retained with the new window installations and where the caming pattern has been removed from the original design, it will be returned in the original diamond pattern for the project. Wood doors are being replaced with aluminum entry doors to update the building egress requirements, but configured to match the original door assembly appearance 1120 $ HEM ARCHITECTS, INC 107 N.
