SPECIAL MEETING OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
May 23, 2008
12 NOON HPC CONFERENCE ROOM
Called to order at 12:05 pm
Members attending:. Lynn Patrick, Jerry Ujdak, Mary Jane Chase, Todd Zeiger, Linda Riley,
Timothy Klusczinski
Staff attending: Larry Meteiver
Public Present: Kevin Griffith, petitioner, 2008-0513
Meeting convened to discuss two matters; an amendment to C of A 2008-0513, and an alley
vacation request in the Riverside Drive local historic district.
Klusczinski: Thank you, onto the first topic on the agenda. The applicant, Mr. Griffith,
made a presentation at our last HPC meeting under Public Comments, addressing a
current C ofA issued by staff dated 05/13/2008, and previously staff approved. Mr.
Griffith indicated that there would be a change to this particular C ofA and he was
asking for consideration for a different window to be applied to the rear of the property.
Because that's not a staff approved issue, the Commission agreed to convene a special
meeting to consider that topic in the interest of time and material ordering dates. The.
original C ofA read: "the HPC of South Bend & St. Joseph County has reviewed the
proposed work, replacement windows in rear of house designed to match the remaining
configuration of originals- 6 over 1. " Mr. Griffith could you state your name and
address for the record and describe for the Commission and describe what alteration you
would like to see to amend this C ofA.
Griffith: Sure, thank you. I'm Kevin Grath, 1118 E Wayne Street. What were looking
to do is with the two first floor windows in the kitchen, as opposed to the 6 over 1, we're
looking at 9 light windows which would match the door of the 1980's work that had been
done, that's a 9 panel, as well as characteristically the dormer in the front of the house.
We see the windows for the kitchen being more with that period, and those are 9 as well.
Klusczinski: For the record, Chair is sharing pictures of the facades of the house and the
rear as it exists, photos date from May 20, 2008 from our field representative. So,
basically, you have a 9 panel or 9 light door and the other two windows that are in the
rear of the property, the 2 x2 and a 3, you're proposing a 9 light window for both of
those locations?
Griffith: Correct.
Klusczinski: Is there any member of the Commission that has questions for the
petitioner?
Zeiger: Just for clarification, those windows that you were showing, those were
replacements done in the 1980's?
Griffith: Yes, some time in the 1980's.
Riley: We saw a picture of your windows the other night where the smaller kitchen
windows came out like this, right?
Griffith: The ones that we're looking to put in? Correct.
Riley: Now, what about the ones that are in your other room? They're bigger, are they
the same?
Griffith: Yes, they push out also. That's relevant to both sizes of windows, yes.
Riley: Ok, so it's one solid window with 9 panes.
Griffith: Correct.
Ujdak: Each half is 9, correct?
Griffith: Correct.
Klusczinski: Any other questions for the petitioner? Hearing none, we'll move on
to... oh.
