Main Street JMS Building Property Owner: John Friedline Landmark or District Designation: Local Landmark and in MRA National Register District Rating: Outstanding STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCElIIISTORIC CONTEXT: The JMS building was designed by noted Chicago architect, Solon Spencer Beman in 1910. It was commissioned by John Mohler Studebaker to be the best office building with fireproof construction -reinforced concrete, granite, terra cotta marble and fireproof tile. It was designated as a local landmark in 1998. APPLICATION ITEM: Install five non -illuminated awnings per enclosed renderings. Awnings are non -illuminated made with Sunbrella fabric on aluminum frame, closed ends and 6" valance per direction of DRB (Downtown Design Review Board) rep., Jim Markle. The awnings will be secured by tapping into pre existing aluminum tubing above the windows and not into the building. STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: B Standards: F. Signs: No neon or flashing signs will be permitted unless they are original to the structure. Billboards and super -graphics will also be disallowed. Only one appropriate identifying sign will be permitted per business. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval. The awnings will not be affixed to the main structure of the building. The awnings with their logo blend in with color and design with the modern portion of the fagade. Klusczinski: Thank you very much, is the petitioner present? Kring: Mr. Chairman, members of the Board, thank you for having me this evening. My name is Ryan Kring, and I'm with US Sign Crafters. I'd just like to highlight a couple of things that were mentioned in the staff report. I'll try not to take a lot of your time. Our proposal is for non - illuminated awnings, the awnings are made from a thick woven fabric that has no opportunity to be lit up at night. They are attached to the square tubing on the building. Nothing is going to penetrate into the granite walls. They're going to serve to enhance the granite walls of the JMS Building. We feel that... and would appreciate any questions that you may have. Patrick: I have one question. Is Ugly Mugs the company that's planning to rent that first f loon? Kring: Yes. Patrick: What are they? Kring: They are a Christian coffee house. They've just install a copper ceiling that's really nice. You guys should check it out. Klusczinski: There are aggregate panels, are they going to remain? Kring: Yes. Klusczinski: So the awnings will cover them? Kring: We designed these so that they wouldn't interfere with anything on the building, and that . they would be the least intrusive possible. Per the direction of Jim Markle, our original proposal was not to have the ends closed, and not to have a valance. And if we did have a valance, we wanted to put copy on it. He recommended strongly that we put a valance on it, no copy and close the ends up and we were more than happy to work with him on that. Zeiger: What's the color? Kring: It's going to be black with sort of a teat blue. It really blends in with the granite that's on the building. I have a color copy. Sporleder: May I ask a question?
