-I had the opportunity to meet and have lunch with the team of folks for Indianapolis that were in the running for
Neighborhood of the Year award recognition. They'd done a project with middle schoolers to create National Register
nominations for their neighborhoods in Old Speedway, Indiana. It was a real joy to be with them when they not only
won the historic preservation award, but also won grand champion of all of the projects and initiatives submitted.
-I also had the opportunity to participate in a walking/trolley tour of thriving downtown Baton Rouge. They've recently
opened a wildly successful Farmers Market in the bottom floor of a parking garage that is open 6 days a week. On
Saturday, more booths are erected outside for the extra vendors. Once a month a parking lot serves as an "Art Market"
for local artists. Baton Rouge also has made the goal of 0% surface parking w/in the next five years. This is both
ambitious and to be applauded. Baton Rouge is the capital city so it's a large but very workable feeling downtown.
Traffic is handled nicely and there are wonderful attributes like landscaping and street furniture. Other stops included
the old Louisiana Courthouse and the new Louisiana Courthouse.
Thank you for your attention to this report, and for the opportunity to attend.
