I
South Bend and St. Joseph County
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
Timothy S. Klusczinski, President
June 5, 2007
227 WEST JEFFERSON BLVD
SOUTH BEND, IN 46601-1830
www.stjosephcountyindiana.com/sjchp/index.html
Phone: 574-235-9798 Fax: 574-235-9578
e-mail: SBSJCkPC@co.st-joscph.in.us
Historic Preservation Commissioners:
A Certified Local Government
 o
Catherine D. Hostetler, Director
As is required upon return from travel for education or training purposes, I wish to respectfully submit
this report of my recent experience at the NUSA National Conference in Baton Rouge, LA.
-The opening keynote was presented by Mack MacCarter of the Shreveport -Bossier Community Renewal
Program. He spoke on the importance of creating relationships within the community that we serve in
that are based on love, honesty and a shared sense of purpose and goals. Very much the public/private
partnership imperative, but presented such that the interpersonal bonds and relationships are given the
priority and the focus of work and nurturing, not necessarily goals or projects at hand.
-Workshop #1: Developing an Actionable Strategic Plan
Kim Hunt, of OH Community Partners of Chicago presented a wonderful, but daunting, workshop about
the differences. between a Mission Statement, Vision Statement, Strategic Plan and Work Plan and how
they can either work together or against the other, and that depends on planning and preparing. Best
practices and ideas were shared regarding crafting these documents and how to work with difficult
colleagues that can poison the process.
-Workshop #2: Healthv Communitv Leadership
Two gentlemen from the Minneapolis Neighborhood Revitalization Program presented a very insightful
workshop on leadership and the differences between leaders, managers, and "speedbumps". The work-
shop addressed handling situations with neighborhood groups, mediating disagreements, and learning to
work with colleagues, volunteers, and neighbors.
-Workshop #3: Making Preservation Work
This workshop was presented by the new New Orleans officer of the National Trust and the new HPC
staffer in Baton Rouge. Unbelievably, Baton Rouge which is a wonderfully preserved, thoughtful
community has only had an HPC for 1 year, and they have only one district and one landmark. Their
staffer related to us that although the community has a definite interest preservation, they weren't in any
way interested in having that interest legislated by a Commission. Very interesting. The New Orleans
officer essentially provided some context for whatever troublesome things we're trying to solve, just
remember that New Orleans has it worse.
COMMISSIONERS
Mary Jane Chase (Treasurer) - Shawn Peterson (Legal Counsel) Gerald Ujdak
Martha Choitz Lynn Patrick (Vice President) Linda Riley
Catherine Hostetler Joann Sporleder (Historic Architect) Todd Zeiger (Secretary)
