The entry will be similar in style of scale to the front entry, less the transoms. We
Will use a wood window, most preferably Marvin Windows, because they offer a true
wood window line.
The brick will be repeated with the best possible brick match, and also time taken
for proper mortar match, with consistency of details to the exterior overhang and roof
lines. We propose to finish the remainder of the exterior of the addition with high quality
vinyl siding, using a dutch lap style product provided by Mastic Corp. All exterior
windows and walkthrough doors would be wood, with exterior detail to match the
existing house. All exterior details, except siding would be painted.
Smooth cedar would be used in place of original poplar trim. Current poplar
available for exterior use is not of the species or quality of that period, and has a tendency
to deteriorate quickly. Redwood is cost prohibitive. All surfaces will be back primed
and finished with 2 coats of exterior paint. We understand that attached garages were
probably not typical of the period, but the addition of an attached garage is a necessary
and functional part of a modern day house. The addition will not be in clear view of the
road from any elevation, except possibly the south. The•homeowners are not only
upgrading the exterior but have major interior renovations that will also return the home
to its period. They are renovating with history in mind, while complimenting the
surrounding grounds.
Please note that Haupert Construction & Co., Inc. has been involved in the
remodeling and restoration business for 27 years, and has had many previous projects that
were sensitive to historical features and details. We will work with the homeowners, and
the South Bend & Saint Joseph County Historical Preservation Commission to complete
this project while being as sensitive to historical accuracy as possible. If there are minor
architectural or material objections we would ask that the certificate be granted with
stipulations so that the excavation and foundations can proceed. The O'Connors are
waiting to move in after the major interior and exterior changes are well under way. They
have a family of six (6) that needs to be settled in by the end of the summer. We hope
this project can be an asset to the community and all involved.
Thankyou for your considerations, Bruce Haupert
