June 4, 2007
South Bend and Saint Joseph County
Historic Preservation Commission
227 W. Jefferson Blvd.
South Bend, IN 46601
RE: Proposed project for Kevin and Joan O'Connor - 53190 Juniper Road
The O'Connor's have had 53190 Juniper Road in their family since the late
19501s. First owned by their mother & father, later purchased by a brother and most
reecntly repurchased by Kevin and Joan O'Connor. The O'Connor's have a great deal of
appreciation for the home, not only as a historic landmark, but now after 50 years, it is a
family homestead.
Records are on file for the home's historical background as an original farm
residence in the 1860's on the north side of the St. Joseph River. It is a two (2) story
brick structure, probable Georgian style with a hip roof set with large. wood double hung,
windows. It once was topped by a period widows walk, which was removed in the
1950's or 60's. There have also been two (2) additions to the building; one being an
atrium style garden room with a brick knee wall on the south side of the home, and a
second family room addition on the north side.
Some changes to the atrium room are needed badly, because of glass & metal
structural issues, but it is not the focus of this application at this time. We will show
changes to that structure, but only as a possibility.
The main focus for application is an addition to the east side, after removal of an
existing back entry addition. We will use a four (4) foot poured wall foundation to create
an addition 24'x 50', of which 12' to 14' of this addition will provide aback entry (or
side) facing south, that will give access to the east entry of the home, enclose the
basement entry, and will serve as a first floor laundry/mudroom area. The other 36 feet
will provide three (3) stalls of garage area.
Because of cost we would prefer a 16' overhead, with a 9' overhead door. Our
other option would be three separate overhead doors, which we understand might be
more accurate to the period, but accessibility, cost, and ease of access to the parking is
important to the homeowners.
