that I could not tell them how to proceed (full open -air access to the basement level, destroyed
original windows and new glass -block units ready for installation), but it would be in their best
interest to obtain the necessary permits right away. Dr. Zimmerman apologized for the hot summer temperatures in the auditorium and
promised that water would be available for the children during this time, now that they were in
session.
He went on to advise the public that both landmarking and the remonstrance would ultimately
prevent planned improvements for the building — improvements realized from a new facility.
And that the current bond issue ONLY supported a new Marquette facility — NOT a rehabbed
building. Since Local Landmark status would also prevent demolition of the current structure it
would most likely halt the plan. It was inferred that there would be no other improvements
suggested, if the current construction plan was derailed. It spoke directly against Landmark
protection. Finally, Dr. Zimmerman outlined the public process and solicited the audience'
support to achieve its goals.
III.
