TODD ZEIGER: There should be some conversation with the staff and the Standards
and Maintenance Committee since it was a landmark corner before you move forward
with reconstruction. We need to have some say in what it's going to look like so it looks
good at the end. We can work_ together with you on that.
PAUL SCHMITT: I will go along with that one hundred percent.
MARY JANE CHASE: Seconds the motion and it passes. John Oxian opposes.
JOHN OXIAN: I will oppose the motion because it was not a recommendation of my
committee; because, you by-passed my committee. I also don't think it should be
mentioned in there that HLFI would be involved with the salvage of key architectural
features, thus Todd should not be making this motion; somebody else should be because
of his conflict of interest.
TODD ZEIGER: That wasn't my motion, John, I just simply.said salvage.
JOHN OXIAN: That still sounds like a conflict of interest to me and you shouldn't be
making this motion; somebody else should be making it instead because you are HLFI.
LYNN PATRICK: Would somebody else like to make a motion that HLFI could assist
them in the salvage of architectural details from this building before demolition.
MARTHA CHOITZ: I will make that motion.
MARY JANE CHASE: Seconds the motion and it passes. Todd Zeiger abstains.
PAUL SCHMITT: You can take whatever you want off the building; but, give me a
time frame here so that I can reschedule with Ritschard Brothers to get this done.
LYNN PATRICK: To answer someone's earlier question about where this came from,
it comes from our Community Preservation Specialist's recommendation that the owners
allow HPC in partnership with HLFI to salvage many of the key architectural features
inside and out before demolition begins. _
6. 2300 Portage Avenue Local Landmark Demolition
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: We received a fax from May Oberfell Lorber to request
that the 2300 Portage Avenue Local Landmark Demolition be tabled.
JOHN OXIAN: The Landmarks Committee recommends that.
TODD ZEIGER: Seconds the motion and it passes unanimously.
B. LANDMARK
1. Navarre Cabin — Report by Joan Sporleder
(See gray copy of Joann's report attached to HPC monthly meeting packet).
DAVID BAINBRIDGE: I am from the Northern Indiana Historical Society. As you are
well aware we are interested in following through with the major restoration of the
Navarre cabin. I understand from the last meeting there were some additional questions
and that is why I am here. Are there any questions?
JOANN SPORLEDER: Did you get a copy of my report?
DAVID BAINBRIDGE: No, I did not.
JOANN SPORLEDER: At the end of my report it says, "I believe this reflects my
conversation with David Bainbridge. So in effect my recommendation to the commission
is to approve the C of A as submitted with the addition of the alternate on the Gable
ends."
5. Gable ends: Proposed framing with siding was questioned because currently'
existing has exposed logs in gable ends. Meeting with David B. and Todd Z. and
referencing older photos of "cabin" continued to be inconclusive. (photo show
horizontal siding, but also shows furring strips on logs were siding had been
21
