Mary Jane Chase: Okay, that's just my suggestion as a possibility.
John Peddycord: I simply understand that it would require someone like Alderwoods to spend
$268,000.
Mary Jane Chase: Okay. That isn't the point I'm discussing. All I'm saying is presenting a view that
that would be a possibility.
Shawn Peterson: Are there any further questions?
Tim Klusczinski: I have a question. I need a point of clarification to either by the staff or, the .._
petitioner. Your client purchased the property in 1996 and the landmark status took affect in 2000,
and you don't know if your client petitioned for landmark status.
John Peddycord: The petition for landmark status was I think by the Commission or staff.
Catherine Hostetler: They were sent a letter requesting...
John Peddycord: and it wasn't our client. It was a prior owner, possessor of title.
Catherine Hostetler: Oak.
John Peddycord: Yeah, Oak or Oakwood, or something like that, and I think it was read in record that
they...
Todd Zeiger: Is Oakwood a subsidiary of Loewen or Alderwoods?
John Peddycord: Pardon.
Todd Zeiger: Is Oakwood or Oak, the company, a subsidiary of Loewen or Alderwoods?
John Peddycord: I don't know if it is a subsidiary or whether they acquired them. That I don't know.
Todd Zeiger: That's a question I have for you then, if I could just jump into mine. I have a question
about that.
John Peddycord: I don't know. I don't have an answer to that question. .
Todd Zeiger: Was Oak a subsidiary of Loewen or, it successor, Alderwoods at the time of
designation? I believe it was. [Some muffled discussion of the company] Either way their attorney in
the minutes...
Bernard Diedrich: I think Terry Miller owned the property before, correct? And, I think he sold it to
Loewen.
Todd Zeiger: I think so, right. Anyway, their attorney did represent that they agreed to the designation
and that's in the minutes. So that's related to the point I'm making.
Catherine Hostetler: They also, I can clarify that situation, with Mr. Masters speaking on September
18, 2000. "The owners take pride in the historic nature of the cemetery. They are only too happy to
comply with the Commissioner's request to Landmark the aforementioned structures and sites. They
would also like to work with the Commission in eminent repairs to the Riverview Gatehouse."
23 January 2006 HPC Meeting Minutes [Corrected Version]
19
