Roland Kelly: Hi. How are you? I present this for your hopeful approval. What we are really doing
with this project is building an apartment for me at the rear of the house. It's a big old house. I've
lived in it for years and my wife is gone now, so I rattle around in it. It gets awfully lonely at times,
and what will happed when we finally get it built - it seems to be taking an inordinately long time to
get this done — but my son and his family will move in with me. They will have the major portion of
the house and I will have my apartment. They will have their privacy and I will have mine. With
three young girls in the house, it will be wonderful for me. I'm looking forward to this for some time,
as Catherine knows, but its been like pulling teeth to get things done, and ... we're getting close and
of course we need your approval; to get it done properly. I trust I'll have that approval by the end of
the evening because I have to get back to a council meeting. Incidentally, that 1926 year means
something to me, too. That was the year I was born, so you now know how old the house is.
[Everyone chuckles.]
Shawn Peterson: The Chair will now recognize any Commissioner who has questions for Staff or the
property owner.
Joann Sporleder: I have a question. The siding is going to be aluminum like the addition?
Roland Kelly: Yes, right. It will match, and of course, the deck that I have now will be removed and
a new deck will be built.
Shawn Peterson: The Chair will now open the public hearing portion of the meeting. Are there any
members of the public who wish to speak on this mater? Seeing none, the Chair now closes the
Public portion of the meeting. Is there any other additional evidence wishing to be submitted on this
matter? Seeing none, the Chair now opens it for discussion amongst the Commissioners. Discussion
has been completed. The Chair will now entertain a motion to approve or deny the C of A.
Joann Sporleder: I will move that Certificate of Appropriateness 2006-0104, 1325 East Wayne
Street, the application for an addition to the back of the house and the deck, be approved as submitted.
Shawn Peterson: There is a motion on the floor.
Mary Jane Chase seconded the motion and it passed unanimously, 7-0 in favor of approval. Roland
Kelly stated his appreciation for the approval and noted that the correct location of his home is on
East Wayne Street South for the record.
2. 2005-1028: 2300 Portage Ave, renumbered to 2006-0123
Shawn Peterson: The next C of A is 2005-1028. Would the owners or representatives for
Alderwoods Group please step to the podium? The Chair will now recognize staff for the
presentation of its report.
Catherine Hostetler: The date of this application is 2005-1028 because of the requests of the
attorneys for Alderwoods Group to table, so we have been tabling this since October. The
designation ... The owner is Alderwoods Group, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It's a landmark
designated in 2000. Rating is significant/12. Statement of Significance: It is a Romanesque style
gatehouse designed by Claude K. Howell, a notable Midwest architect, in 1900. Granite masonry
units are cut and constructed in much the same way as other stone buildings in the area including
Tippecanoe, Copshaholm, and the Birdsell House, which were constructed by expert German
stonemasons. They shaped granite boulders with hand tools and fitted each into the fagade.
APPLICATION ITEMS: Demolition of the entire structure. RECOMMENDATION: This is a case
of demolition by neglect. The building does not serve the needs of the cemetery administration, so
23 January 2006 HPC Meeting Minutes [Corrected Version]
2
