Catherine Hostetler: Yes, the boundaries start on Riverside Drive, and then they go down to the
corner of Riverside and Bartlett, go up Bartlett to North St. Joseph Street across St. Joseph street
to the alleys at Hammond Place and then include the two houses on the alleys of Hammond place
and the two houses on Navarre on the north side.
Lynn Patrick: Alright, thank you.
Catherine Hostetler also reported progress in meeting with other department heads including
Sharon Kendall, John Wiltrout of Water Works, and discussed July 26 meeting with Lynn
Patrick and the mayor to discuss the City Plan., and HPC topics.
Two items needed voted on due to new County procedures for permission to travel. The first
request is a request from Wayne Doolittle, to attend a 3-day course "The Upkeep of Historic
Structures" to be held August 17 -20 at the Pine Mountain Settlement School in Kentucky. Cost
is $250 for tuition, lodging and meals. Roundtrip airfare to Louisville is approximately $180.
Lynn Patrick: Sounds like a real good deal.
Martha Choitz: Do we have the money?
Catherine Hostetler: Yes.
Martha Choitz: I make a motion to approve the trip as was just explained to us.
Tim Klusczinski: Second.
Lynn Patrick: All in favor? (Ayes heard) Opposed? (No nays) Motion carries.
Moved: Martha Choitz Second: Tim Klusczinski Vote: 7 -0
Also for approval is a staff request to attend the Cornelius O'Brien Main Street conference, this
year being held in Wabash, Indiana. Between September 28 -30, 2006. Room board and tuition is
anticipated to be the same as last year at approximately $150, but none of those details have yet
been published.
Mary Jane Chase: I'll move that we approve the tuition etc for the Cornelius O'Brien
conference, it is a very worthwhile
Lynn Patrick: Do we have a second?
Martha Choitz: Second.
Lynn Patrick: All in favor? (Various Ayes) Opposed? (Silence) That carries too.
Moved: Mary Jane Chase Second: Martha Choitz Vote: 7 -0
Todd Zeiger: (Addressing Director Hostetler) Have you gotten any feedback from the County
regarding the budget situation, any heads up at all?
Catherine Hostetler: None.
Lynn Patrick: So its all in the papers, but nothing yet... ?
2. Assistant Director's Report — Amy Herdman
Assistant Director Herdman distributed her report to the Commissioners and reviewed a number
of new initiatives that the HPC is currently pursuing, including The ArtCard Project, creation of
the Six at Risk list, the logo project, a partnership with South Bend Chodolate Company and
Workshop Wednesdays at the Library.
Catherine Hostetler: The motivation behind these projects is not just to raise the profile of the
HPC but also to raise funds to help offset our operating expenses. We realized the budget
situation that the County is in and decided to utilize the information and know -how that we have
in the ojjice to begin 'leveraging the franchise' so to speak. John Livingston (former Counsel)
was previously approached with the matter offundraising and was of the opinion that we could
do such things. We have the seed money available from Southhold Foundation to do this, and our
plan is to use that money, then replenish and grow it. We intend to position the HPC as a profit,
or at least a revenue center, above the fees that we charge for CoA's etc.
Amy Herdman: It bears mentioning that we'd begun all of these projects before we truly knew
how dire the County budget situation was, so these efforts aren't reactionary in any way, but
were very proactive.
12
