I
ADDENDUM TO
Application No. 2004-1229
Eutzler- Hollingshead Cemetery
On January 13, I spoke to John Walters, the cemetery restorer, about his
techniques. He often provides his expertise to the DNR/DHPA for lectures and seminars,
has worked in cemeteries across Indiana and Michigan, and follows the Graveyard
Association's recommendations for proper treatments and remedies to restore broken
headstones.
He cleans the stones with ammonia and water, and not with abrasive cleaners or
wire brushes. Once the stone is clean, he will match the mortar mix to the stone and use
the appropriate epoxies depending upon the stone composition. The mortar mix he uses
to fill voids to inhibit further water damage and decay is: white Portland cement,
hydrated lime, and marble or limestone dust.
Mr. Walters has surveyed the Eutzler-Hollingshead cemetery, finding 7-8 rows,
the original cemetery lane, several slotted bases with fragments, and large holes that had
been excavated and refilled with dirt and pieces of headstones many years ago. These
pits will be excavated and the headstone pieces will be matched to the proper grave.
When completed, the cemetery will be 75 % restored to its historic configuration.
