Michael Hayes, Penn Twp.
Trustee, spoke on behalf of the cemetery.
JOANN SPORLEDER: Is the cemetery still being used and do you have any record of
who is buried there?
MICHAEL HAYES: The cemetery is strictly historical. We do have maps for the
cemetery; however, the last time the cemetery was mapped was in 1976 by a group of
people. Mr. Waters had found through his investigative work that some of the stones had
just been stuck in the ground and were not in their proper bases. The only way to make
the cemetery more historically correct was to match up the stones with the bases that are
underground. To do this he would have to probe into the ground to find out where the
actual bases are for the stones.
JOHN OXIAN: Joe Ganser also turned in a list of people that he thought were buried in
the cemetery.
MICHAEL HAYES: We plan to have everything documented with pictures as well as
documentation as to why each stone was put into its base. We are going to take a picture
of where each stone was originally sitting, and a picture of the base to prove how it
matched up with that stone.
We are going to put families all together because right now they are not together. One of
the cemeteries is still an active cemetery; however they have not done a burial there for at
least three years. Chapel Hill cemetery has allowed us to bury some people in their
cemetery so that we can reserve the space we have for later dates.
GERALD UJDAK: How many people are buried in the cemetery and where is the
cemetery located?
