see if this type of door would be appropriate for our home. (Mrs. O'Blenis passed out a
colored pamphlet with doors for commission members to look over).
JOHN OXIAN: Was this an original door?
DARCY O'BLENIS: We have no idea if it was or not.
JOHN OXIAN: I would recommend a door that would match an original door on a four
square style house; which would either be one with horizontal panels, or one with two
vertical panels on the top and one horizontal panel on the bottom. I have a four square
house and that's what my doors look like. That is usually the door you get; even if it is a
back door.
MARTHA CHOITZ: What is the age of it?
DARCY O'BLENIS: I believe it is right at the turn of the century; 1903.
JOHN OXIAN: Then none of these doors in this pamphlet would match. They are all
modem styled doors. What size is your door? Is it a 32 inch or 36 inch door?
DARCY O'BLENIS: I am not sure; I think it is a 32 inch door.
JOHN OXIAN: If you are going to do this type of restoring then what you want to do is
put in a back a door that fits in with what you are doing with the house.
DARCY O'BLENIS: What should we do about our windows?
JULIE SCHUTTE: Have you spoken to Wayne Doolittle? He mentioned that he was
going to drop off some information to you about a man who actually builds new wooden
windows and has done a few other projects in the area. His name is Steve Schoberg. He
is presenting a workshop on August 27` in conjunction with Historic Landmarks and
HPC in the five hundred block of West LaSalle from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.
JOHN OXIAN: You and the staff mentioned earlier that there were storm windows
present in the back of the house at the time of the fire. What type of storm windows were
they?
DARCY O'BLENIS: Most of them were wooden storm windows. There was one storm
window on the back bedroom that was an aluminum framed stormed window. We plan
to put wooden storm windows back in.
JOHN OXIAN: If that is what you are planning on doing then it should be stated in the
C of A that wooden storm windows were present at the time of the fire and will be
replaced with new wooden storm windows.
JULIE SCHUTTE: The other option for new windows would be Marvin windows.
They are all custom -made to fit. They do not make stock wood windows so you can get
them in various sizes.
DARCY O'BLENIS: We did have a deck that was approved years ago that my husband
had added on. The deck will need to be replaced because that is where the fire originated
from. Do we need to come back in for that?
LYNN PATRICK: That would be staff approved.
JOHN OXIAN: I will make a motion that the C of A be approved as recommended by
staff with the addition that the storm windows that were present at the time of the fire will
be replaced with new wooden storm windows including the one aluminum storm
window. The kitchen door will be a type that will be appropriate for a four square style
house and will be either vertical or horizontal paneled on the bottom half of the door.
MARTHA CHOITZ: Seconds the motion and it passes unanimously.
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: We have a C of A that is not on the agenda and I
apologize for this. It was done in July I I for 801 East Bronson. The homeowners want
4
