NEW BUSINESS
SouthHold Committee Meeting Date
A meeting date was set for Monday, August 1, 2005 at 5:00 pm at the HPC office.
Vi. HEARING OF VISITORS
DON SPORLEDER: I am happy to report on a very successful Michiana Regional
Greenways charette that was held at the Layton Center on June 14` Summary reports
and power point presentations will be made available to groups like the Historic
Preservation Commission, very shortly. The Greenways that were identified have some
very intriguing historic preservation components as well. Here's where groups like
Michiana Water Shed, who are pushing hard for getting the east and west parts of Leeper
Park to pull together by the recreation of that walking lane underneath 933 and Michigan
as well as the possible recreation of the first bridge across the St. Joseph River to create
connections between Greenways on the west side of the river and of course the east bank
development and the river walk that occurs there And of course the big push with South
Bend to do the connection past Potato Creek and on into LaPorte county. Another
interesting thing grew out of this charette was the identification of the importance of the
remaining interurban, the South Shore, the connection between South Bend and Michigan
City. Does South Shore have historic status? Has it been identified as a landmark? It
certainly has potential with the greenways thing and it will be one of the places where
Trails with Rails will be part of the proposed connection between these two counties.
As you all know Congress is reauthorizing the TA21, Transportation Enhancement Act,
and that includes an important historic preservation section and of course those monies
are made available through the department of transportation and INDOT, which is the
Indiana component. I would like to remind the commission that WDOT has its annual
work session meeting at the various region offices. The one for our region in LaPorte is
August 4' Perhaps it would be very effective if there could be representation from the
Preservation Commission at either the afternoon workshop or evening workshop in
LaPorte at the INDOT annual meeting.
VII. ANNOUNCEMENTS, MISCELLANEOUS, ADJOURNMENT
LYNN PATRICK: Makes a motion to adjourn the meeting.
MARY JANE CHASE: Seconds the motion and it passes unanimously.
Meeting adjourned at 9:29pm.
Historic Preservation Commission
Minutes: July 18, 2005
ATTEST: , Secretary
