HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
OF SOUTH BEND & ST. JOSEPH COUNTY
MONTHLY MEETING
July 18, 2005 4` Floor, Council Chambers, County-City
Building, South Bend, IN
MEMBERS PRESENT: Lynn Patrick, (President)
Martha Choitz, (Vice President)
John Oxian, (Treasurer)
Mary Jane Chase, (Member)
Joann Sporleder, (Architectual Historian)
MEMBERS ABSENT: Diane Wrobel- Illes, (Member)
Gerald Ujdak, (Member)
Catherine Hostetler, (Member)
STAFF PRESENT: Julie Schutte, (Assistant Director)
John Livingston, (City Attorney)
STAFF ABSENT: Catherine Hostetler, (Director)
ALSO PRESENT: Brad Pontius, (contractor), Bruno Zovich,
Bob Yapp, Don Sporleder
1. CALLED MEETING TO ORDER
Lynn Patrick called the meeting to order at 7:35 pm. Only four members were present
and the Commission did not have a quorum.
JOHN OXIAN: I would like to make a motion that we operate as a committee of the
whole during the C of A portion and further if needed, and then ratify the items when
we're back in regular session.
MARTHA CHOITZ: Seconds the motion and it passes unanimously.
II. PUBLIC HEARING
A. CERTIFICATES OF APPROPRIATENESS
1. 2005 -0620; 714 Forest Avenue, porch roof modification
JULIE SCHUTTE: (See staff report and pictures attached to C of A in meeting binder).
The homeowner, Bruno Zovich, was present. Brent Thompson, the city forester,
reviewed the house and the tree. His opinion was that the tree is healthy; it would not be
appropriate to cut it down. The homeowner also stated that he would not have a problem
with a notch being put into his porch roof to accommodate the tree.
MARY JANE CHASE: Have you ever considered taking the trees down because they
are quite intrusive to the house?
BRUNO ZOVICH: They are in very good health and have been inspected about two
years ago. For aesthetic reasons I don't think there is any reason to do that.
JULIE SCHUTTE: The trees are also enormous and the cost for cutting them down
would probably be more expensive then putting a notch in the porch roof.
MARTHA CHOITZ: I so move that 2005 -0620 be implemented on the
recommendation of the staff to take a rectangular notch out of the porch roof around the
tree to accommodate future growth.
MARY JANE CHASE: Seconds the motion and it passes unanimously.
2. 2005 -0707; 930 Riverside Drive, 2 story addition
Joann Sporleder arrives at the Commission meeting, and the Commission has a
quorum.
