Staff hopes to send them within the next week or two. I had a conference call with Susan Stanis and Shannon Hill from HLFI and members of the DHPA grant staff regarding the Saint Joseph County/South Bend resurvey. The grant staff has advised that they foresee difficulties approving a grant to resurvey the county, but agreed the South Bend survey does need to be updated. The funds held in trust with HLFI may be enough to cover the survey of the city and printing the books. John Oxian recommended'that a national register nomination for LaSalle Street roughly from William to Chapin Street should be included as part of the resurvey of the city and should be completed by HLFI or some other competent consultant. JOHN OXLAN: I move to recommend LaSalle Street for a national register nomination as the Commission had for several years noted the street's significance. If the contract with HLFI for the resurvey cannot be amended to include the application, then a new contract and separate grant application should be drafted for the project. JOANN SPORLEDER: Seconds the motion and it passes unanimously. - Karen stated that as part of her research for the landmark report on 619 Sherman, she has researched other land marked gabled ells within the city. There are several other gabled ells. The window openings at 606 Leland were lately reduced and filled by smaller vinyl windows. 618 Leland now has a striped roof and vibrant exterior color scheme. JOANN SPORLEDER: I move that the owner of 606 Leland be advised to restore the original dimensions of the window openings. GERALD UJDAK: Seconds the motion and it passed unanimously. JOHN OXIAN: I would like_ to bring up something that we should think about as a policy. In the paper it stated that the city of South Bend is allowing homeowners to put these light fixtures in their front yards. They have already put three of them up on Franklin Street, which they did not come in for C of A's. Since this might be something that we might get a lot of in the historic districts, I think we should adopt some type of a policy stating which type of these light fixtures we would like to see in the historic districts, like first choice, second choice, and then allow the staff to make decisions on this unless somebody objects; then they could come before the commission. Otherwise we are going to be looking at these things at every commission meeting. JOANN SPORLEDER: Do you want us to put that on the agenda for next month with the various possible selections? JOHN OXIAN: Yes, I talked it over with Karen and asked her for a report and recommendation as to which one she thinks would be most appropriate in each district or area.
