Staff does have some concerns that the design of the exterior of the garage will fall just short of the stick
style of the house. With a few changes that reflect the design of the house, the garage would look really
sharp and create a more unified design for the property.
The Queen Anne house has many vertical design elements: the shutter -like double cross molding pieces
underneath the turret, the vertical trim pieces on either side of some of the windows that extend to the
gable, and the wide trim board. The latticework on the main gable, the curved brackets, the scroll -like
porch post details, and the arched balcony also add character -defining features to the exterior.
Staff would recommend adding wider trim corner boards and trim pieces under the boxed eaves and the
fish scales to give more visual support to the roof and gable. The faux- shake siding under the gable (see
the architectural drawing) reflects the shingle style more than the playful stick style half -round fish scales.
Wider trim boards (1" by 4" and 1" by 6") and half -round fish scale siding are available in wood and fiber
cement board. Above the porch roof is an interesting but simple trim group that frames the window and
adds texture to the exterior siding. Something similar could be applied to the second story window. One -
over -one double -hung windows would better match the windows in the main house.
I realize that adding many of these details to the garage could add to the Lewis' budget, but the inclusion
of some would add a bit more design interest to the structure and thus integrate the garage and the house
as a more harmonious pair. Overall, staff recommends approval of the garage and hopes the Lewis'
would be able to adapt the exterior details and proportions of the house to the garage.
Paving Removal: The removal of portions of the parking pad and the driveway, and the cement walk
between the driveway and the apartment complex would be a vast improvement to the site and the
neighborhood! !! Staff gladly recommends approval.
Fence: The Lewis' also propose to install a fence along their east property line. Staff would like to point
out that the Fredrickson house was originally laced with a 3' wrought -iron fence with three gates. The
fence had two staggered rows of finials. A fence that adapted this design would be truly appropriate.
As a second option, staff would suggest a more open fence than the stockade type along the side. An open
fence would provide some privacy from the apartment and add beauty to the neighborhood. Staff
recommends viewing 1027 E Wayne as an example of open fence design on a busy urban property.
A third option would be continuing the stockade privacy fence up to the rear set back of the house. A
more open and decorative fence could transition from the privacy fence at the rear set back and into the
front yard where the fence will have a greater impact upon the house and the neighborhood. A more open
fence would be a lovely landscaping tool and buffer from the neighboring apartment building. Staff
would recommend the above suggestion before extending the stockade fence the entire length of the
property line.
