Staff does have some concerns that the design of the exterior of the garage will fall just short of the stick <br />style of the house. With a few changes that reflect the design of the house, the garage would look really <br />sharp and create a more unified design for the property. <br />The Queen Anne house has many vertical design elements: the shutter -like double cross molding pieces <br />underneath the turret, the vertical trim pieces on either side of some of the windows that extend to the <br />gable, and the wide trim board. The latticework on the main gable, the curved brackets, the scroll -like <br />porch post details, and the arched balcony also add character -defining features to the exterior. <br />Staff would recommend adding wider trim corner boards and trim pieces under the boxed eaves and the <br />fish scales to give more visual support to the roof and gable. The faux- shake siding under the gable (see <br />the architectural drawing) reflects the shingle style more than the playful stick style half -round fish scales. <br />Wider trim boards (1" by 4" and 1" by 6") and half -round fish scale siding are available in wood and fiber <br />cement board. Above the porch roof is an interesting but simple trim group that frames the window and <br />adds texture to the exterior siding. Something similar could be applied to the second story window. One - <br />over -one double -hung windows would better match the windows in the main house. <br />I realize that adding many of these details to the garage could add to the Lewis' budget, but the inclusion <br />of some would add a bit more design interest to the structure and thus integrate the garage and the house <br />as a more harmonious pair. Overall, staff recommends approval of the garage and hopes the Lewis' <br />would be able to adapt the exterior details and proportions of the house to the garage. <br />Paving Removal: The removal of portions of the parking pad and the driveway, and the cement walk <br />between the driveway and the apartment complex would be a vast improvement to the site and the <br />neighborhood! !! Staff gladly recommends approval. <br />Fence: The Lewis' also propose to install a fence along their east property line. Staff would like to point <br />out that the Fredrickson house was originally laced with a 3' wrought -iron fence with three gates. The <br />fence had two staggered rows of finials. A fence that adapted this design would be truly appropriate. <br />As a second option, staff would suggest a more open fence than the stockade type along the side. An open <br />fence would provide some privacy from the apartment and add beauty to the neighborhood. Staff <br />recommends viewing 1027 E Wayne as an example of open fence design on a busy urban property. <br />A third option would be continuing the stockade privacy fence up to the rear set back of the house. A <br />more open and decorative fence could transition from the privacy fence at the rear set back and into the <br />front yard where the fence will have a greater impact upon the house and the neighborhood. A more open <br />fence would be a lovely landscaping tool and buffer from the neighboring apartment building. Staff <br />would recommend the above suggestion before extending the stockade fence the entire length of the <br />property line. <br />
