SOUTH BEND COMMUNITY SCHOOL CORPORATION
MONROE PRIMARY CENTER
Tuc/Cpoltifing / Sealltlg
ATTACHMENT
to
APPLICATION FOR CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
The proposed work being requested for approval is for the completion of the masonry restoration
on the exterior of Monroe Primary Center that was originally started in 1999. As previously
performed in 1999, the work includes the complete cleaning of all exterior masonry, complete
tuckpointing of all masonry, the repair and replacement of any damaged brick and/or limestone,
the recoating of the limestone previously coated throughout the exterior of the building, and the
use of a clear masonry sealer over the existing brick work. The west, north, and two-thirds of the
east elevations of the original 1932 building were completed during the Summer of 1999. It is
requested that the same procedures and materials be used to facilitate the completion of this work
on the remainder of the elevations of the 1932 original building and all elevations of the 1952 and
1959 additions.
For your review, attached is documentation for the specified products that were used in the 1999
restoration work. This documentation describes the procedure used in this repair work for
masonry cleaning, tuckpointing, brick sealing, limestone repair, and limestone coating. It is
critical to the life of the building exterior to have this work completed this summer due to several
large areas of the 1932 building and the 1952 addition experiencing severe water infiltration in
areas of masonry and masonry grout that have deteriorated. All materials being used are sensitive
to the nature of this facility, including the use of lime -based mortar and cleaning and restoration
materials such as Dietrich No. 707 Limestone Cleaner Pre -rinse, Jahns No. M70 Softstone
Patching Mortar for Limestone, Jahns No. M90 Patching Mortar for Repair of Concrete.
We have visited the site with Joanne Sporeleader, Architectural Historian, and Julie Schutte,
Assistant Director, explaining the previous procedures that took place and showing the need for
the continued restoration to preserve this building. The goal of this restoration project is to
provide a uniformity of the masonry work throughout the entire building in a manner that will
restore its watertightness and preserve the masonry and limestone for many years to come.
