KAREN HAMMOND-NASH: (See staff report attached to C of A).
SKIP MCCRAY: (Representative for City Awning of South Bend). We took on this project
through the request of the current customer in the location. We have the approval of Mr.
Friedline and the city of South Bend to go ahead with this project.
We have not been able to determine what actually lies behind the metal siding that is
there now. Our best estimation at this point is that it is some sort of wooden structure that
supports that aluminum siding. That's what we ran into when we installed the other two
awnings, both over where Flint Personnel Services is at and where the vacated cafd is at this
time.
JOHN OXIAN: In other words you're saying that there is a gap between the wall and the
aluminum siding?
SKIP MCCRAY: We believe there is a wooden header there that is holding the aluminum siding
onto the building. So, yes, I would say there is a gap there.
JOHN OXIAN: They did not take any of the terra cotta off of the building. So if there is a gap
in between there, and you put your siding up there, you would be attaching it to whatever is
holding the outside aluminum and would not interfere in any way with whatever is behind it.
SKIP MCCRAY: Yes, sir, that is what we believe.
LYNN PATRICK: What is the cost of this project?
SKIP MCCRAY: This project will cost the customer roughly $1200.00.
LYNN PATRICK: Why does the owner want to put this awning up?
SKIP MCCRAY: To dress up the front facade of the building and provide some protection for
the store front window. They evidently have had some fading problems with some documents
because of the picture. window:
LYNN PATRICK: At the reading room.
SKIP MCCRAY: Yes, the Christian Science Reading Room.
JOHN OXIAN: Even though I may agree with some of your earlier comments, I would still
have to agree with the staff that before I would vote to have this awning installed, I would want
my inspector to go out there with you when you look to see what actually is behind the
aluminum siding that is already there. I do not want you going through the terra cotta that is
behind the aluminum siding.
SKIP MCCRAY: What we will do is before we actually make any attempt to install the awning,
we will see if we can't get a piece of that siding off and see what we are actually going to be
going into first. If it appears that we have a wooden header that we can go into and we are not
3
