ANDY LAURENT: Right, and as they were using those wells they dropped the water
table so low because they were pumping out, so those (B.O.T.'s) got into the soil at that
level and then the water table level rose up and the problem is basically the saturated
zone has risen.
GERALD UJDAK: Now, has the city looked at the possibility of all that stuff migrating
to the North Side of Sample Street?
ANDY LAURENT: Our information is that it already has. We have some monitoring
wells around the Municipal Services Underground Source Tank and we do get some hits
of coroneted solvents. It doesn't actually seem to be affecting the east -west access road
for the new Public Works Service Center, and if it was it receded. When we went out last
fall we dropped about forty-eight borings to try and find out where this pool was.
GERALD UJDAK: How deep did the borings go to?
ANDY LAURENT: Forty feet.
MARTHA CHOITZ: So, are you asking us for our support in getting the word around to
attend the meetings if we feel that we would like more information?
ANDY LAURENT: The meeting was on Thursday of last week. We are accepting
written comments until tomorrow. But, any comments that any of the commissioner's
may have I would be hapy to add to our grant application. The deadline for this grant
application is March IV , so we have to get this application out tomorrow for sure.
On the EPA grant, if you look at the blue shaded area on that map you can see that
those buildings kind of correlate to these here and you have got this L-shaped building,
and the source area we are talking about is right here under that building and the ground
water is moving this way. As an underground source of water it's moving North; and as
it is moving North it is dissolving.
JOANN SPORLEDER: Who is doing all of this work?
ANDY LAURENT: The city is. The city acquired this property in April of last year and
basically our strategy is to tackle the remediation first.
JOANN SPORLEDER: So, do you contract this work out?
ANDY LAURENT: We had a general environmental consultant on the project and they
have in essence created our environmental strategy out there and they are helping us work
with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management; but, the work actually goes
out as a cleanup grant if we get the funds, and the work will then go through a public bid
process.
LYNN PATRICK: Is there anything we can do to help you get those funds?
