manufacturing operations on the adjacent neighborhoods and the local economy.
As mentioned above we have been very public in our discussion of the strategy for
redevelopment of the project area. We have not had any opposition to the project - in fact
the community has been widely supportive of the Strategy and wants to have it
implemented as rapidly as possible. The overall sentiment seems to be that 40 years of
empty, deteriorating buildings is too long - let's move on and get them demolished and
new businesses built. Through the Steering Committee mentioned above, the reuse
planning had broad community involvement and consensus Wasreached on the plan and
the strategy.
4. We have had ongoing communication about the project,w th the communityythrough:the
newsletter published in 2002 and future editions that will bedistributed at least annually.
We expect the 2003 update will be mailed to the entire'population of South Bend by
including it with monthly water bills. In addition` we". will continue to provide speakers to
various neighborhood and business organizations and expect the South Bend Tribune to
continue to provide stories on progress of the project. Newsletters will be printed in
English and Spanish. Articles on the project have been printed' n:the Indiana Department
of Environmental Management's Brownfields Bulletin, and the Indiana Association of
Cities and Towns newsletter, Actionlines:= The City of South -Bend has had articles about
the project in its Progressive Profile which is sent to all community organizations and
leaders.
,t
-11-
