1,2,4-trimethylbenzene
1,3,5-trimethylbenzene
xylenes
Of the above organic CDCs, PCE and TCE exceed Indiana Voluntary Cleanup Program
(VRP) Nonresidential Land Use Cleanup Goals. COC concentrations were compared with
Residential Cleanup Goals in recognition of the potential for contaminated groundwater
to migrate off-site and eventually beneath residential properties. PCE, TCE, n-
propylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene exceed Residential
Cleanup Goals in at least one groundwater monitoring well_In the"case of n-
propylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and 1,3,5=trimethylbenzene;, Cleanup Goals were
derived using equations in the VRP Resource Guide Attachment F.'(fuly,1996).
Investigations by APT and Hull determined the presence ofone or more source' areas for
PCE (and potentially TCE) beneath buildings near'the southwest, quadrant of 1.the former
stamping plant property, where solvents were apparently'stored aril used for parts
degreasing during the period of operation by Studebaker Corporationand Allied Products
Corporation. The source areas appear to be persistent; and may contain dense nonaqueous
phase liquids (DNAPL). The source areas are also contributing dissolved volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) to a plume that moves in the direction of groundwater flow (toward
the northwest) and extends beyond the Site's northern boundaiwThe City will be
utilizing a Brownfield Site Assessment"grant frond the Indiana Development Finance
Authority to further define the nature and delineate the -dimensions of the source areas.
Based on a preliminary risk -assessment conducted as:partof an initial Phase II
Environmental Site Assessment; potential human exposures include ingestion and/or
dermal contact with watef&rived from wells and inhalation of COCs volatilizing from
groundwat'er.`into, indoor air. Of particular_concern are the chlorinated compounds PCE
and TCE; which are:widely distributed across the Site and migrate off-site in the
direction of adjacent residential properties. These compounds have the potential to
.biodegrade into vinyl 'chloride; which is in general more toxic than the.mother
compounds.
Human health effects associate, dpWith exposure to PCE and TCE include:
Central nervous„system disorders, including dizziness, headache,
vertigo, arid, confusion
• liver and kidney cancers and leukemia
• Developmental; effects of fetuses
• Liver and kidney damage
• Birth defects
• Cardiac abnormalities in children
• Tumors in the lung, liver and testes
-5-
