June 1, 2003
Historic Preservation Commission
Of South Bend & St. Joseph County
County -City Building
227 West Jefferson Blvd.
South Bend, IN 46601-1830
RE: Request for Certificate of Approval at 53117 Olive Rd. — Original German School
Landmark
Dear Commission Members:
We are requesting a Certificate of Approval be granted to us for the following necessary
work:
The south side fascia of the house, and soffit have been damaged by weather and birds. I
have purchased the lumber necessary for the repair. The lumber will be primed and
painted to match the same as existing, however, a seam will be necessary, due to the fact,
that the size we need in length and width, as one piece, is no longer available. We have
purchased the closest match, to the original, as possible within our means.
The electric power line to our house is in the way of this repair. This power line is
unsightly and distracting, (as are the power lines in front of the house), and truly takes
away from this prominent perspective of the house on the street side and the south side.
We have looked into the cost of burying the cable, from the utility pole to our house, and
the cost could range from $1700 - $2000. I ask the commission for help in ways to locate
fmancing for this project.
Also, the window on the southwest corner needs repair. It will need to be rebuilt and
wood may need to be replaced around or at the bottom of the window. This will be done
with materials of the same or equal in strength and durability.
Last of all, on the north side of the house, I removed the brick steps to the back door
entry last year, because they were crumbling beyond repair and dangerous. I wish to
rebuild the steps, and we seek the expertise of Joanna Sporleder for appropriate design.
Sincerely, n n
Diane Wrobel-Illes & John S. Illes
Historic Preservation Board Member and Spouse
