STAFF REPORT -
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Date: 06/05/03
Application Number: 2003-0605
Property Location: 53117 Olive Road — Original German School
Property Owner: Diane Wrobel-Illes & John Illes
Landmark or District Designation: Local Landmark
Rating: Significant
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
Built or remodeled circa 1890, the original structure was once used as a schoolhouse for German Township
children. The schoolmaster resided in the house next door. The original two -room brick schoolhouse featured
Greek revival elements and detailing, including a gabled peak on the front fagade with narrow arched
windows, hand -carved dentil moldings on the entryway, plain frieze, wide eaves, and boxed cornice. Large
windows lit the interior prior to electric lighting. The sturdy materials and detailing used for the schoolhouse
reflect the community's high -regard for the education of their children. The original schoolhouse underwent
changes in 1950 as it was reconfigured as a residence before the structure obtained Landmark status. The
1950s renovations are of historic note as well. Glass block windows, enclosed rooms, and the fishpond in the
kitchen reflect that distinctive architectural era.
APPLICATION ITEMS:
1 Letter of request
1 Drawing of brick stoop (hopefully)
RECOMMENDATION
Regarding the repair of the south side fascia and soffit, the owners have attempted to find an exact match of
the existing lumber, but have not. Unless one knows where lumber of the existing dimensions can be found,
approval should be granted for the repair of this element of the residence. Likewise, the repair of the window,
as it is an in-kind repair should also be granted.
The owners removed the deteriorating brick steps prior to the approval of landmark status for safety concerns.
They would like to replace the steps with a half round configuration in brick. Staff recommends approval per
the consultation of Joann Sporleder, Architectural Historian, regarding typical brick stoops of Greek Revivals
and/or 1950s residences.
Staff agrees that the burial of the power lines connected to the house will increase its handsomeness when
from viewed from the street. If done in a non -intrusive manner, the removal of the power lines will also return
some of the structure's early historical character as the school house most likely did not have electricity to
light the interior. Staff recommends approval.
