These were great losses to the
character of the county's landscape and to its history. The loss makes those farmhouses and other struc-
tures that are left, including your own, even more noteworthy and fitting for designation as Local Land-
marks.
Recently, we reviewed and resurveyed the historic sites and structures located in your township
that the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Survey rated "Significant" or "Outstanding." This survey
was completed a few years ago, and it noted that your residence is a historic structure eligible for the Lo-
cal Historic Landmark designation. The Commission is currently considering your property for this
honor and distinction.
If a property is designated as a landmark by county ordinance, certain preservation standards will
apply regarding exterior changes to the building and the property's landscape. These have been drafted to
aid both you the property owner and the HPC Commissioners in stewardship of historic structures and
sites. These standards fall into two categories, Group A and Group B. Your house would best fit into
Group B, the more flexible of the standards. I enclosed a copy of them for you to review.
Please send us a letter letting us know what your thoughts are regarding the possible landmarking
of your property and the suitability of the standards within 60 days. If you have any information about
the history or architecture of your house, outbuildings or property we would be sincerely grateful for it,
along with the letter. This would greatly enhance our archives and knowledge of the historic buildings
located in the county for future reference and research.
