JOHN OXIAN: That's why I say we should work on this together. Maybe we can even
work with Economic Development, because they are interested in developing this area
too.
KAREN HAMMOND -NASH: The point of the issue is that there is approximately eight
and one half inches between the walls of the church and the walls of the house. Both of
those actually have windows, which are completely darkened by the other structures.
Both buildings were built the same year.
JOHN OXIAN: On Charles Street there a lot of empty lots. Some of that land belongs to
Economic Development. When we made that into an historic district Economic
Development specifically asked us to leave that area out, the empty lots, because of the
possible development of those areas.
So far there is no development being done in this area. However, this would be
something that would help this area. That's why this is something that, I think, as a
committee we can work together on. We can also try and get the city involved by telling
them that we have a house that we would like to relocate to that area. We could also ask
them if they would like to help us in relocating the house to that area. We could then not
only help them promote that area, but also save the house.
REVEREND CHARLES JAMERSON: If we do this than it will be a win, win situation
for everyone involved.
JOHN OXIAN: I would then like to put this into Landmark Committee and then we will
come back with a proposal and then I will call a meeting on this.
JOANN SPORLEDER: What eventually would happen to the lot if the house were to be
relocated?
REVEREND CHARLES JAMERSON: We are doing interior renovations and that
particular space would eventually evolve into our main entrance. The present sanctuary
we presently have now seats approximately only twelve hundred and fifty people.
When we purchased the building about ten years ago, our congregation was only
about one hundred and twenty -five, which was fine at that time. Now our congregation is
approximately fifteen hundred and we do not have as much space as we did before.
What we are going to be doing, is utilizing the back portion of the building which is
now the auditorium. We are going to make the auditorium into a two -level sanctuary,
which will seat about eight hundred and fifty people. This would allow us to stay in this
area and to have a new main entrance.
Right now our church does not have a foyer space. We do not have any space up
front for any book stores, or gatherings, or anything of that nature.
JOANN SPORLEDER: So, are you thinking of acquiring the area once the house has
been relocated?
