Fn <br />JOHN OXIAN: Despite what Gene Oakley says I still recommend that this be made into <br />a landmark. <br />There was further discussion between commission members as to whether this dairy <br />should be made into a landmark. <br />MARTHA CHOITZ: I recommend that we send it down to the Common Council. <br />DIANE WROBEL-ILES: Seconds the motion and the motion passes unanimously. <br />Gerald Ujdak and Joann Sporleder both voted against the motion. <br />2. 1021 Portage Avenue; South Bend, Axtell House, built 1905 <br />KAREN HAMMOND-NASH: The homeowners report and the favorable <br />recommendation from the staff and the Landmark Commission was reported to the <br />commission at the last monthly meeting. There are copies of these documents available <br />for any commission member who wishes to review them. <br />CATHERINE HOSTETLER: I move that we send 1021 Portage Avenue, the Axtell <br />House, down to the Common Council. <br />MARY JANE CHASE: Seconds the motion and the motion passes unanimously. <br />C. HEARING OF VISITORS <br />1. Ted Foti, regarding proposed landscape designs affecting Leeper <br />Park. <br />TED FOTI: I wanted to share with you some of the thoughts that the firm that has been <br />employed by the city has for doing the downtown area. Memorial has been secured to do <br />the landscaping for our campus. Memorial has even pro -offered to try and help make <br />improvements to Leeper Park.. <br />In fact the firm has even calculated what this project will cost. For several years now <br />we have been concerned with the condition of the park. There are several different areas <br />of the park that have deteriorated quite considerably. Memorial hopes to succeed in <br />trying to revive some interest in making improvements to Leeper Park. Memorial is <br />willing to contribute $50,000.00 dollars to help with the improvements that need to be <br />done. <br />Memorial has even met with a task force that was co-chaired by Mr. Oxian and Mr. <br />Sinclair on a couple of different occasions. The thought process during these meetings <br />with the task force was that we would use the $50,000.00 dollars as seed money and then <br />try and find other corporate interests in the community that would be willing to match the <br />$50,000.00 dollars. In turn we would continue to do this until we had sufficient enough <br />funds to make substantial repairs to Leeper Park. <br />We have come up with a list for the area that is referred to as Leeper Park West. This <br />list basically covers a variety of items such as top soil, seedlings, electrical and historical <br />
