That is the one we might have a problem and I would like you to be on top of that. I am
going to put you on Landmarks Committee with me.
1
JOHN OXL4N: The other one I would like to go to is, Martha took a tour of 1820
Portage Avenue. I would like her to give a report on that
MARTHA CHOITZ: Gave a report on her tour of 1820 Portage Avenue.
Discussion was then held among Commission members about how the property was
being presently taken care of by the owner the upcoming public auction that was going
to be held on August 10`x' to sell the property at 1820 Portage Avenue; and the important
historical value of the house and what steps should be taken to make it an historical
landmark.
JOHN OXIAN: Moving on to the appro4-al of the minutes.
KAREN HAMMOND NASH: We moved too quickly to regular business. Hearing of
the Visitors was moved up on the agenda because we knew that we were going to have a
visitor, and we do have one.
GERALD KLINE: I am here representing myself, as a resident of the West North Shore
Historic District. I am here to ask you, as a government body, for your support and your
assistance in resolving a problem property in our district. If you have not examined the
property at 117 West North Shore Drive; I sincerely encourage you to do so. The
property owners there have done nothing since they got the property. When they got it I
can assure you the exterior was in mint condition; because, the prior owners had it
painted whether it needed it or not on a regular schedule. It is now rotting the wood; you
can see the results of lack of care everywhere. It's my opinion, which is shared by other
people in the district. Actually, I think that if any of you had to live next door to such
property; would be very concerned about your own property value. I for one, having
lived in my home for thirty one years am not about to have something that would be
bulldozed by the prior code enforcement officer. Receive no action whatsoever. If, as
one of you has suggested, it is because of this owner, if he is the owner, and I am not sure
he is, he is part of an old -boy network. I think it is time that you and I contact our
networks, because, I intend to do just ihaL So, perhaps, Mr. Bodnar, you would be
willing to explore fellow attorneys; and ask if this person is a part of an old -boy network,
and, therefore; is not subject to the codes that every one of us is subject to. I would
appreciate your checking; because, he is an attorney, according to the phone book.
After listening to Gerald Kline, commission members had a lengthy conversation about
the property Iocated at 117 West North Shore Drive:. The important points of that
conversation are as follows
1. Who are the present owners of the property?
2. The past and present condition of the stated property, and the constant lack of
.maintenance to the property by the owners.
15
