GERALD UJDAK: Next item, number five. 2002-0711;1332 East Wayne Street,
South; widen driveway.
KAREN HAMMOND HASH: The applicants are seeking to replace an in kind concrete
crumbling stoop and also are two earthen window wells with plastic covered over them;
he wants to make those concrete and put grating over them. He also seeks to widen his
driveway. The replacement of the deteriorated concrete stoop with a new concrete stoop
with the same material, as of course, as something by itself can be automatically staff
approved. Staff would also recommend approval of the concrete and iron grate window
wells. That leaves the issue of widening the driveway. Staff reports that in the entire
East Wayne District, almost every garage is a two -stall garage; and almost every
driveway is a single width driveway. Those that are not single width, were originally
single width and were widened mostly before the neighborhood became an historic
district. Staff does not recommend approval of widening the driveway, for the reason
that if too many driveways in the East Wayne District were widened the green and the
rural appearing character of the neighborhood would be altered. The homeowner
currently has a sixteen -foot garage door and a twelve -foot driveway. What the
homeowner is seeking to do now, is to expand his twelve -foot driveway to a seventeen -
foot driveway. He is seeking to add an additional five feet to his driveway.
GERALD UJDAK: Somebody make a motion to --
JOHN OXIAN: I would like to make a motion that we table this until next month, when
the applicant is here. I would then like to know his reason for widening the driveway,
and why he wants to make the driveway wider than the garage door.
KAREN-HAMMOND NASH: With the exception of widening the driveway, which is to
be tabled until next month; is staff authorized to approve the rest of the recommendation?
GERALD UJDAK: Is there a second to this motion?
GERALD UJDAK: Ok. I will second the motion then. Ok, all those in favor then say
aye. All those against say nay. Motion carried unanimously.
GERALD UJDAK: Ok, the last one. 2002-0115; 215 Hammond Court, install primacy
fence.
KAREN HAMMOND NASH: This is an amendment of an earlier application. The
applicant applied in January to install a six-foot dog-eared top cedar fence around his
back yard. At that time the back yard had an open picket fence across the backyard. The
commission had a special meeting at which they considered the application. The
difficulty with the application was that there was already an existing six-foot tall privacy
fence on either side of the back yard. The Building Department's, Jim Marco, indicated
to me that the department does not ordinarily approve of putting two solid fences back to
back to one another; on account of the difficulties that it gives to the maintenance. He
stated that when this is done, it becomes impossible to maintain either fence. He
lQ
