meeting Monday. This contractor, though new in town, has previously done an excellent
job of locating appropriate replacements.
(3) At some point, this duplex was turned into a four -unit apartment house, and sets of
outside stairs were run up each side of the building to the upper units. One of those stairs
has been removed already, and the owner would like to remove both, incident to
returning the house to a duplex. Staff recommends approval of the removal of both
sets of outside stairs to the second story, and restore the clapboards to their original
appearance.
(4) Construction of two new first floor decks adjoining the two rear doors. The decks are
proposed to be roughly 12' by 20', and to be roughly 3' off the ground, with turned
balustrades, shaped rails, stairs to the ground, and lattice skirts. Staff recommends
approval of the first floor back decks, contingent upon (1) use of appropriate
balustrades and rails, consistent in style with the rest of the house, and (2) the ends
of the balustrade should be anchored to the deck, and not to the wall of the house.
(3) Installation should not damage the house.
(5) Construction of two new second story decks where windows have previously been made
into exterior doors to the stairways that are now being removed. This will prevent having
two doorways to nothing, without the expense of restoring windows. The decks are
proposed to be about 4'by 4' , with turned balustrades and shaped rails. Staff would like
to see the original windows restored, but would not oppose the second -floor decks,
provided that installation merely makes use of the modifications previously made
for the stairways, and does not further alter or damage the exterior walls of the
house.
