Nominations are accepted in 3 categories which are defined as follows.
a. Preservation - The building or the site has been maintained in a
manner to protect its historical and architectural integrity. Little
"restoration" work would be necessary if the building changed hands.
Example: Oliver Inn, 630 W. Washington.
b. Restoration - the building or site has undergone major work to bring
it back to its architectural integrity. Example: the Chapin House, 601
Park Avenue.
c. Adaptive Re -Use - the use of the building has been changed without
compromising the architectural or historical integrity. Usually the
buildings in this category have been endangered and the new use has
saved them. Example: Tippecanoe Place, 620 W. Washington.
2. Buildings should be at least 50 years old.
3. Buildings throughout St. Joseph County, Indiana are eligible.
4. Because the awards are given to people and organizations, the current
owner of the buildings should have been the person responsible for the work.
5. Buildings that have been sandblasted or cleaned using other abrasive
methods will not be considered.
6. The decision of -the Awards Committee will be submitted -to the Historic
Preservation Commission. The Commission decision is final.
