806 LELAND <br />HISTORICAL CONTEXT <br />Richard and Maude Elbel constructed this Queen Anne style house in 1894. Mr. Elbel <br />started a music store at 114 N. Michigan Street in 1887, his brothers joined the business <br />shortly after and renamed it "Elbel Brothers", with Richard serving as president. Richard <br />Elbel also was the conductor of the Elbel Orchestra, which played in various local <br />theaters. Mr. & Mrs. Elbel resided at this address until 1904 when they sold it to Frank & <br />Ida Korn for $4,500.00. Frank Korn was a farmer until 1902 when he fell from a silo <br />breaking his back. The Koms lived here until 1909 when the property was sold to Wilkie <br />Barton who in turn sold the property to Norman P. & Maude Kelb in 1916. Norman was <br />a railroad postal clerk; he and his wife resided here until their deaths, Maude in 1949 and <br />Norman in 1950. Upon Mr. Kelbs passing the property was inherited by their children <br />who immediately sold the property to Peter J. & Dolly Klimishin. Peter was an employee <br />of the Bendix Corporation, he was also the first owner to rent part of the house out to <br />boarders. The property remained in the Klimishin family for several decades. The <br />current owners, William Ahern and Michele Morin purchased the house in 1992. <br />ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION <br />This is a two and a half story, Queen Anne style house with an irregular plan, brick <br />foundation and brick central interior chimney. The first story walls are cladded in insul- <br />brick while the second and third stories are covered in wood shingle siding. The roof is <br />pyramidal in design with cross gables, asphalt shingles, and molded cornices below the <br />eaves. The windows are one over one double hung with molded entablatures. The corner <br />windows on the south fagade have pendills and the front door is wood with dentils and <br />light. The house also boasts a decorative one have width front porch. The porch has a <br />coffered front pediment, balustrades, two groups of three square fluted wood columns on <br />brick piers at corners with brackets and turned spindles at eaves. The general <br />landscaping consists of a lawn, three mature trees in front yard, driveway to the south and <br />a garage to the rear. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Based on the Historic Preservation Commission's Local Landmark Criteria's adopted by <br />the Common Council, the structures and property at 806 Leland are recommended for <br />designation as a Local Landmark based on the following criteria. <br />The building and site meet the following criteria: <br />1) Its embodiment of elements or architectural design, detail, material or <br />craftsmanship which represents an architectural characteristic or innovation; <br />2) Its suitability for preservation; <br />3) Its identification with the life of a person or persons of historical significance. <br />4 <br />
