July 1, 2002
Mr. John Oxian
President
Historic Preservation Commission of
South Bend & St. Joseph County
227 Jefferson Blvd
South Bend, IN 46601
Dear Mr. Oxian:
I am writing on behalf of Rum Village residents and business owners to express our full
support for the demolition of the Oliver School. I am a long -time resident of the Rum
Village Neighborhood and an active member of the Rum Village Neighborhood
Association and the Rum Village Partnership Center Committee. I have enjoyed
working hard for the benefit of my neighborhood by beautifying it and eliminating blight
and disorder.
One of the things that, in my opinion, is still pulling our neighborhood back is the former
Oliver School building. It is located on a main street in the neighborhood; and is a
major hazard for the safety of our residents, business owners, and guests. Our
neighborhood no longer attracts people because they view the neighborhood as an
unsafe place to live. This is partly due to the presence of the dilapidated Oliver School.
While we appreciate the historic value of the building, we are convinced that in its
present state it is nothing more than a nuisance.
We have participated in shaping the future of the Oliver School through numerous
public meetings and are aware of the City's plans to demolish the building, and work
with one or more developers on redeveloping the site. We believe this would be good
for the whole neighborhood. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to understand our
concerns and permit the City to demolish the building.
Sincerely,
Kay Blo er
Rum Village Resident
