HPC has been working in conjunction with the Park Avenue Neighborhood Association in an
effort to create the Park Avenue Local Historic District. As matters progress a new local his-
toric district may be created before the end of the year 2002.
SUMMARY OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS
During the year 2001 the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph
County has remained involved in a broad range of local, state and national historic preservation
issues and concerns.
This has been a year of many changes including new location and new faces. It has also been a
year in which the Commission has fought many battles which have successfully given much
needed public attention to the importance of preservation and local history. During this hectic
time the day-to-day administration of the Local Historic Districts and Local Landmarks contin-
ued to be a primary concern of the HPC and remains a large portion of the Commissions partici-
pation in the preservation of significant local cultural resources. In addition, the Historic Pres-
ervation Commission continues to seek out local historic resources in an attempt to protect them
for future generations.
The Historic Preservation Commission maintains its responsibilities as a Certified Local Gov-
ernment and continues its interaction with local government agencies and officials in the long-
term task of preservation education and advocacy.
Staff continues to monitor the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory for the City of
South Bend and St. Joseph County, maintaining files and accumulating data pertinent to keep-
ing this inventory current.
PROJECTS AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE
As -noted, the Commission will complete the printing of the Studebaker Booklet as well as sev-
eral informational brochures. HPC will continue its efforts to identify, research and protect po-
tential local landmarks with in the city as well as the county and will proceed to work with the
Park Avenue Neighborhood Association in the effort to create a new local historic district.
The Historic Preservation Commission will continue to create and establish a set of guidelines
for the handling of Certificate of Appropriateness and minimum maintenance violations, includ-
ing the writing of an ordinance that would enable the Commission to red tag infractions.
As always the Historic Preservation Commission will strive to protect South Bend's and St. Jo-
seph County's historical sites, structures and objects while educating the public about local his-
tory.
5
