South Bend and St. Joseph County
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
227 WEST JEFFERSON BLVD.
SOUTH BEND, IN 46601 -1830
Phone: 219-235-9798 Fax: 219-235-9578
e -mail: historic @michiana.org
John Oxian, President
A Certified Local Government
Rhonda Saunders, Director
August 14, 2001
MEMO
To: HPC Members
From: HPC Staff
Re: Studebaker Pamphlet
As most of you know the Commission has put together a booklet regarding Studebaker to be sold in- house, as
well as at the Museum and various other potential locations. The staff has worked out a plan of action with the
Studebaker Museum to market these booklets. The Commission would agree to pay for the printing of the
books and then would sell "X" amount of them to the museum for "Y" price. We would also sell the books
through our office and are currently investigating the possibility of marketing them through the Studebaker
Catalog and other outlets like the Center for History and the Art Museum.
The staff has completed inquiries pertaining to the cost of printing the booklet, which breaks down to roughly
$0.51 per book for an order of 5,000. With this in mind the staff would like the Commissions approval to con-
tinue with the project, i.e., send out requests for printing bids for orders of 5,000 to 10,000. The Staff will se-
lect the lowest bid, have the ordered filled and will then sell the required amount to the Museum, all in time for
the Studebaker National Conference. The staff is also requesting the Commissions approval of a set price to
charge the Museum for each book and a set price to charge the public (the museum will set the same public
price as long as it covers all of their costs). The staff would recommend that we sell the booklets to the mu-
seum for between $2.00 to $2.50 a book, this way we will more then double our money. Then we can set the
price of the booklet for the public at around $5.00 to $10.00 dollars. The staff would ask that the Commission
set a price for the Museum and then approve a price range that the HPC Staff and the Museum Director can
agree upon at a later date.
If all goes well and no we don't hit any major snags in regards to copy right issues the staff hopes to wrap this
up by the end of September or January at the latest.
Saving The History Of South Bend & St. Joseph County By Protecting The Irreplaceable
COMMISSIONERS
Martha Choitz Richard Helmus Jerry Weiner (Treasurer)
Mary Jane Chase Catherine Hostetler (Vice- President) Gerald Ujdak (Secretary)
Richard Morrison Joann Sporleder (Historic Architect) Thomas Bodnar(Attomey)
