After Prohibition the company again began to produce beer and soon filled 50,000 <br />barrels a year. The primary sales area for their products was northern Indiana and <br />southern Michigan. The firm eventually built new offices directly across the street from <br />the brewery and converted the old office space into manufacturing space. By 1950 <br />business was stagnating, production was at half its previous volume. The brewery closed <br />on November 11, 1950, however, the ice department, Polar Ice and Fuel, continues to do <br />business to this day. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The Preservation Guidelines for Local Landmarks follow the Rehabilitation Model. <br />Group B Standards <br />Ms. Anderson applied for installation of a fire exit door to allow conversion of the <br />second story into a rental hall for parties, in January of 2000. This application was <br />denied by the Commission do to a lack of information concerning door style and size. <br />The Commission's denial stipulated that Ms. Anderson could reapply at any time when <br />the required information becomes available. <br />A new application was received from Ms. Anderson on April 25, 2000, proposing <br />to remove the last panel of glass on the College Street (west) fagade, first floor of the <br />furniture store. The glass panel will be replaced with a NAAMM'S HMMA, design "F", <br />hollow metal fire exit door. The door will be hung in a 16 gage steel frame. The actual <br />stairwell will be located with in the structure and will exit out the farthest western corner <br />of the first floor, glass fagade. The staff finds the proposal to be with in the guidelines <br />and recommends approval. <br />2 <br />
