STAFF REPORT
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Application Number: 2000-0615
Property Location: 610 N. St. Joseph
Property Owner: Quinton & Lara Smith
Landmark or District Designation: LHD-NSJ
Rating: C/10
Key Number:
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
This house was built in 1909 by real estate speculator, Seth Hammond. He rented
the house to the United Brethren Church as a parsonage until 1911 when he sold it to
Jacob and Phillipine Ackerman. Mr. Ackerman was a dyer for M.W. Manufacturing
Company. The Ackerman's sold the property in 1917 to their son Rudolph Ackerman.
Jacob and Phillipinne resided at 201 E. Navarre while Rudolph resided at 610 N. St.
Joseph. Mr. & Mrs. Ackerman lived on Navarre Street until Jacobs death in 1928 at
which time Phillipinne moved in with her son Rudolph on N. St. Joseph Street and her
other son, Herman, moved into the house on Navarre Street. Mrs. Ackerman lived at 610
N. St. Joseph until her death in 1934.
Rudolph Ackerman was a prominent member of the Democratic Party; he was
twice the district chair. He was also an examiner and receiver for various banks
throughout South Bend. Rudolph Ackerman owned the property until his death when he
left it to his sister, Emma. Emma Ackerman resided in the old family house at 201 E.
Navarre and rented 610 N. St. Joseph to John Owens. Miss Ackerman never married, so
when she died in 1953 she left the house to several, distant relatives, with Josephine
Werkmen as executor. They sold the house in 1955 to C. Horvath for $8,300.00. Mr.
Horvath lived there until his death when his son, Mark, inherited the house. Mark
Horvath sold the house to Patricia Horvath in 1990, who in turn sold it to Memorial
Hospital in 1993. Memorial donated the house to the Near Northwest Neighborhood
Association in 1997 after four years of using the property as a rental. The Near
Northwest Neighborhood Association restored the house and sold it to the current
owners, Quinton and Lara Smith in 2000.
